Preparing for Career Events...

Before Career Events, be sure to prepare multiple resumes and business cards for networking and to hand out to recruiters. Even if you are not on the job market this year, it pays to make contacts for the future. Below are some templates to help you get started.

  • Resumes - UCLA is working on developing career building resources for postdocs, but in the meantime, Stanford University has compiled an excellent guide with tips on resumes, interviewing, and other essential job skills. Pages 29-43 even include sample resumes for a variety of fields. Make sure your resume reflects the job you want!

  •        Download Stanford's Career Planning Handbook.

  • Business Cards - You can pay for University business cards (you will need a recharge ID from your PI), or you can make your own with an inkjet or laser printer. The following template is designed to be used with Avery brand "Clean Edge" Business Cards in the standard 2in x 3.5in size. Be careful to buy the ones designed for your printer type, inkjet or laser. These are available in packets of 200 cards for $8-$15 at office supply stores and the Ackerman Store. Be sure to use the "Clean Edge" cards because they separate without visible perforated edges and look much more professional. Also, be careful to print the cards one sheet at a time, since they separate easily.

  •        Download Business Card Template 1 - Windows version.
Download Business Card Template 2 - Windows version.

  • Download the file, and save it to your computer (Windows only).
  • Open the file in Word (Office 2003 or later version).
  • Change the text to match your contact information, being careful not to disrupt margins, gridlines or graphics.
  • Save the new version of the template.
  • Print onto the Avery Clean Edge Business Card paper one sheet at a time.
  • Carefully separate the cards after the toner has set.
  • Finished!
